For a long time my DW posts have been infrequent and limited to posting vids and vid challenges but for the new year I'm going to join Fannish Fifty Simply fifty posts a year on something fannish.  For the past several months I've been thinking about commenting on what I've been watching and reading and posting con reports now that I'm gradually starting to go back to conventions again, so this sounds good.  Let's see if i can get one post a week and be a bit more engaged in fandom.

The vids I love most are generally character studies or focus on teamwork or found family or include hope or humor.  Ships, in general, are not high priority.

Whatever music that inspires you, go for it. Either instrumental or with lyrics is fine.

For these first four, I love them wholeheartedly and would be happy to have a vid for them.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986) [SAFETY]
Sweet Tooth (TV 2021)
The Mysterious Benedict Society (TV)
What We Do in the Shadows (2014) [SAFETY]

For the last three I do have some specific requests.

Die Hard
I'm only interested in the first movie in the series. In fact, what I'd like is a Christmas holiday vid for one of my favorite Christmas movies.

The Princess Bride (1987) [SAFETY] I would love a vid that focused specifically on Inigo Montoya

시지프스 | Sisyphus: The Myth (TV 2021) A character study of either Sigma or Gang Seo-hae would be fantastic.

Fanworks was back this year, first as an online minicon in the Spring and then an in-person con in Chicago this weekend. For the online con I submitted a premiere vid, When We're Detectives.  It's a celebration of the wonderful team of Mabel, Charles, and Oliver.

Although I'll probably always be sporadic in posting to DW, I'd like to start posting con reports again. Last weekend I had a virtual membership to the wonderful [community profile] vidukon_cardiff and surprisingly found the package of convention swag in my mail a couple of days ago. That was really fast UK to US mail service. convention swag I watched the Vidding Narrative panel, which was great and some of the Vidder's Choice vidshow on Friday and both were great. For the rest of the weekend I only managed the 2012 Retrospective and Visual Feast vidshows due to some plans to spend time with family, but the swag contained a thumb drive with premieres vids and I plan to watch them as time permits. I had a vid from Tampopo that I made for the 2020 [community profile] vexercises in the Visual Feast show.

Thank you for creating this vid for me. In general, if the music inspires you to create, feel free to use it. Metal is probably the only kind of music I really don't like.

General requests: In this pandemic year, I really love vids that are funny or uplifting. Family of any kind, perseverance and success, these are themes that make me happy. For some of my requests I will love anything you choose to make. These include:
Kim's Convenience
Cleverman
Princess Bride
Reclaiming the Blade
Raising Arizona

For the the NASA/JPL YouTube channel I would love a vid that focuses on the Mars rovers. Talk about perseverance and success - this little rovers are all about that.

For the Peter Cushing Dr. Who movies, I am really only interested in the second one - Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. Focusing on Tom Campbell, the London policeman who gets scooped up for a trip to the future would be great.

I've been through most of them now and have a few more recs. Every year Festivids works as a great recruitment tool, too, for media that I might have missed this year it's made me add Raising Dion to my Netflix list, scour the internet for NTSC version of the series Ghosts (not available yet, maybe it'll show up on Britbox), and decide that after 20 years it's time to rewatch Brother From Another Planet.

Here are a few more recs.
Confident
Somehow I drifted away from watching Killjoys after the second season. This vid’s pulling me right back in.

Hello My Old Heart
A really magical and heroic Moana vid

Try Everything
Another great Gourmet Makes vid!

Garden of Your Mind
I don’t play D&D or watch Critical Role, but this vid’s so well edited and brilliant.

A Place Called Home
The search for family, belonging, and personal identity in The Expanse

Speeding Rover
I’m a sucker for space stuff, like these trusty little rovers rambling about the red planet doing science

We're Here, But Should We Have Come?

Ah, Richard Ayoade looking uncomfortable and disappointed with the world!

Festivids is live and it looks like a bumper crop of vids, it's going to take me a while to get through these! I didn't participate this year (retiring, starting new business, hardware issues) and I miss that, but over the next couple of days I thought I'd rec some of the ones I enjoy the most.

so tired
This vid - this should be a recruiting vid for Gourmet Makes. I love the series, granddaughters love the series, my son’s secret crush is Claire. This vid could go out and infect others

Body Talks
The fluid dancing of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire.

Untitled Goose Vid
I don’t usually care much for video game vids, but this one is just fun.

Come on Over
Schitt’s Creek is one of those shows I tried watching and just didn’t get into. These guys in this vid might just have charmed my way into giving it a second chance

A Gorgeous Vid Moment
It’s like the vidder took all my love for this Queer Eye and squished it all into a vid.

An American Primer
Using the words of James Baldwin and historical footage, this is a powerful, thoughtful look at being black in America

Our House
I’m adding this to my list to remind me to look up the series Ghosts. So many actors from Horrible Histories are in this!

Fighter
The Expanse has eaten up my viewing/reading life lately and this vid showcasing the strength of Bobbie and Chrisjen leaves me eager for season 5

Children’s Work
I’ve been curious about ST: Discovery. vids like this make me want to go ahead and get that CBS All Access subscription to check it out.

Emigrante
Brother from Another Planet is such a power movie that does what good sf always does, serve as a commentary on today in a science fiction wrapper. This vid is a great intro to the movie.

I really had absolutely no plans for vidding Doctor Who. Then Sacha Dhawan's delightful face came on the screen. I'm blaming this on the Master - he compelled me to make it!

Wow, time flies and all that. I passed on the autumn Equinox Exchange because of real life issues and now that Festivids nominations are live, I was planning to give that a psss, too. I'm retiring at the end of the month and have to prep my house to sell, and pack and move across country from Kansas to Connecticut and find a new place to live. A lot to deal with right now.

But then I saw that something had been nominated that has been tickling my creative muse for awhile. At the very least I think I'll aim for making a treat if that source is requested. That way I won't have to worry about defaulting if all the real life stress deters me from getting it done.

Title: All Dead
Fandom: Highlander
Music: All Dead, All Dead by Queen
Warnings: physical triggers (flashing lights) and violent deaths

This year I was paired with [personal profile] sweetestdrain who requested a Highlander vid. I'm not sure this exactly fit the brief, but watching Bohemian Rhapsody has left me listening to a lot of Queen lately and this song just cried out for a vid, something that shows that grief and loss are an integral part of friendship between immortals. After reveals went live a friend pointed out to me that Brian May actually wrote this song about his dead cat, but no reqrets, I still think it works as I'd intended. Here's the streaming vid as well as the link to AO3

The last month got away from me, I really meant to post earlier. The theme for this round of [community profile] equinox_exchange was sources from the 1990s and [personal profile] bironic did a fantastic job with my request for vids from Northern Exposure. Secondary characters really make the show richer and the two I love most are Ed Chigliak and Marilyn Whirlwind. A vid for either of them would have been great. The generous [personal profile] bironic made two - one for Ed and one for Marilyn.

There was a point in working on my equinox_exchange vid that I didn't think my idea would work. Then I was afraid I would have enough time to review all the source I needed or have time to get it edited to my satisfaction.

Needless worrying, as usual. I've got a full first draft and three weeks to tweak it into shape.

Festivids reveals happened this morning and so I can post the vid that I made, but first I want to rec a vid that made me laugh so much.

Woo Hoo, an Archer vid is an absolute joy and perfectly captures the absurd zaniness of the show.

I was assigned to make a vid for [personal profile] scribe using the LOTR production videos. I had a basic idea in mind to use Ethel Merman's version of No Business Like Show Business, but rejected that idea for several other songs that didn't quite work. That's when I realized, there's no song that was a better fit for what I wanted to do and no one who sings it as well as Ethel Merman.

Thank you for making this vid for me. Feel free to use whatever music inspires you. These are the 1990s sources that I love. The first one I've only discovered recently, but the other four were the loves of my college & grad school years.

Midsomer Murders
This is such a rarely vidded fandom that i would be happy for anything. Wry Tom Barnaby & his family life, quirky villages, slightly bumbling Gavin Troy. I'm particularly fond of the first episode.

Northern Exposure
I'd love a character study of either Marilyn Whirlwind or Chris Stevens or Ed Chigliak or an ensemble vid or anything, really. I loved this show so much when it was first broadcast and love it still.

Fargo
A vid devoted to Marge Gunderson would be great, but seriously, any vid for this movie would make me happy.

Homicide: Life on the Streets
Frank Pembleton fascinated me back in the 1990s. I would absolutely love a Pembleton vid.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
There many things I love about this show (the BEST Trek ever!) but these can be boiled down to these things: Sisko, the fantastic ensemble cast, and the complex portrayal of life on a space station.

Festivids 2018 is live today with 79 vids from 53 fandoms. I have not one, but two gifts. First is
Under Pressure, a beautiful vid for the movie Ikiru. The second is The Ministry of Silly Walks for the Thick of It, which matches my general disdain of politicians at the moment.
valoise: (Default)
Equinox Exchange reveals were posted yesterday and the wonderful [personal profile] elipie made this fun Legends of Tomrrow vid for me.
Tubthumping

I was assigned to make a vid for [personal profile] such_heights, which I have to admit was a little intimidating. I've not a particularly prolific vidder and I was tasked to make something for one of my fav vid creators. I knew I was going to be making a vid about the fun and adventure of traveling in the TARDIS. Taking my cue from the Dear Equinox Letter, I decided to put the focus on Eleven and the Ponds, who actually among my favorites, too. This song by American Authors has exactly the energy I wanted.

What We Live For

valoise: (Default)
I love character study vids, funny vids, vids that focus on motion - anything that honors the source and inspires you would be fantastic. Musically, whatever inspires you is find with me. Id probably not be happy with heavy metal or country, but seriously, what inspires you - go for it.

I've always liked Fanfare for the Common Man as a piece of music and have wanted to use it to pay tribute to working women throughout history. But when I began to gather source material it slowly dawned on me that what I really wanted to do was applaud the bravery of women in flight, from 18th c. balloonist Sophie Blanchard to more well known figures such as Amelia Earhart and Jackie Cochran, ending with women in space.

This version of the music is from Aaron Copeland conducting the London Symphony Orchestra playing his Fanfare for the Common Man.

Photographs and video are largely from the National Air and Space Museum, US National Archives, NASA, InternetArchive.org, as well as Ethiopian Airlines

Thank you so much for making this vid!

Music: I like a wide range of music, except maybe metal or country, and whatever inspires you to make the vid would be great. I know it's my request, but it's got to be something that gets your creative juices flowing.

Vid style: I'll admit that I'm a sucker for humor and love vids that emphasize team work or found families. Also really fond of well put together action or motion in a vid.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow
I love this show, the fact that it lets things get crazy and the great multicultural team that they've assembled. Humor would be great, but if your muse takes things in a serious direction, let it go there too.

Timeless
One of my favorite things about this show: it doesn't shy away from the problems a woman or a black man face when they step out of the 21st century.

Doctor Who (1963)
Companions!!! Please give me companions and the joys and tribulations of traveling through time and space.  My only caveat - Mel, Peri and the 6th Doctor are not particularly favs.  You don't even need to try and include them. Anyone else is great, I even like Turlough!

12 Monkeys (1995)
I'm game for anything here. Go nuts and make it fun!
