In some ways VidUKon has filled the hole left by the death of Vividcon - a plethora of vidshows, a scattering of how-to panels, and hanging out with fellow vid fans & makers (although not quite the same interaction on Discord as in the hotel lobby or con suite). I've had vids at VidUKon for the past several years (usually in themed vid shows, occasionally in premieres). This year I was poking through my old vids for something to submit for Vidder's Choice. I chose my old reframing of Show White as the evil character.

As part of my commitment to make 50 fannish posts this year I thought I'd start with two books about fannish subjects that I really enjoyed in 2022.

Phasers on Stun by Ryan Britt

I'm old enough to have watched TOS when it was originally broadcast. Through the years I've loved many of the series and some of the movies and continue to be an avid fan. Britt's book explores the making of Star Trek up to the present, finishing his book just before Picard 2 and Strange New Worlds aired in 2022. Based on research and interviews, his love of the franchise is evident throughout the book.

Vidding: A Historyby Francesca Coppa

My academic background is in Public History and Archival Management and this book hits both those buttons in a big way. The study and preservation of popular culture means a lot. In this book Coppa traces the history of vidding, delving into the people, the technology, the methods and interpretive instincts that have motivated vidders since those first slide shows were set to taped music at Star Trek conventions.

I would highly encourage anyone who loves watching and/or making vids to read download the free ebook version of this book. When she talks about a some groundbreaking element of a specific work, you can watch the actual vid in the online supplemental material.

This is a master post of my vids on AO3. They are grouped alphabetically into tv shows and movies. Some of my vids are still only on YouTube . I’ll be adding those to AO3, but those I made for conventions or with photos taken at conventions will probably stay on YouTube. The conventions are exclusively Highlander-related, mainly Highlander Worldwide or the Peter Wingfield Fan Club.

I really had absolutely no plans for vidding Doctor Who. Then Sacha Dhawan's delightful face came on the screen. I'm blaming this on the Master - he compelled me to make it!

Title: All Dead
Fandom: Highlander
Music: All Dead, All Dead by Queen
Warnings: physical triggers (flashing lights) and violent deaths

This year I was paired with [personal profile] sweetestdrain who requested a Highlander vid. I'm not sure this exactly fit the brief, but watching Bohemian Rhapsody has left me listening to a lot of Queen lately and this song just cried out for a vid, something that shows that grief and loss are an integral part of friendship between immortals. After reveals went live a friend pointed out to me that Brian May actually wrote this song about his dead cat, but no reqrets, I still think it works as I'd intended. Here's the streaming vid as well as the link to AO3

There was a point in working on my equinox_exchange vid that I didn't think my idea would work. Then I was afraid I would have enough time to review all the source I needed or have time to get it edited to my satisfaction.

Needless worrying, as usual. I've got a full first draft and three weeks to tweak it into shape.

Equinox Exchange reveals were posted yesterday and the wonderful [personal profile] elipie made this fun Legends of Tomrrow vid for me.
Tubthumping

I was assigned to make a vid for [personal profile] such_heights, which I have to admit was a little intimidating. I've not a particularly prolific vidder and I was tasked to make something for one of my fav vid creators. I knew I was going to be making a vid about the fun and adventure of traveling in the TARDIS. Taking my cue from the Dear Equinox Letter, I decided to put the focus on Eleven and the Ponds, who actually among my favorites, too. This song by American Authors has exactly the energy I wanted.

What We Live For

Now that I've got my VVC vids done and submitted (2 for premieres this year!) I think I"ll get back to working on something I've been mulling over for a long time: a multifandom vid to Everything Stops for Tea by Professor Elemental. So I'm off the create a spreadsheet and keep my eyes open for tea drinking in action & sf movies and tv. First off, I need to clip Highlander and the last season of Blackadder. What I'd really like to find, either in cartoon, tv or movies, is a clip of Batman drinking tea, as there's a verse in the song just for that.

I had a bright idea to try something new and different for Festivids, but after struggling with it for a month I've thrown in the towel. I've got to scrap that idea and start over.

Sigh. Don't think I'll be making and treats of pinch hits this year.

I've tweaked my Premieres vid enough and it's uploading as I type. I thought I had an idea for a new project, but as listened to the music a few more times and rewatched season 8 of Doctor Who, the inspiration pretty much evaporated, so I don't know what I want to do next. I have a couple of ideas that really aren't quite fanvids, I don't know what you might call them.

The first one came to be literally in a dream. I dreamed that I vidded Bob Dylan's Masters of War with print ads and promotional footage of military industry contractors, interlaced with photos and headlines of industry lobbyists and elected officials. I also worked in portions of President Eisenhower's Chance for Peace speech and Farewell Address that serve as cautions from the 1950s against letting the military contractors gain a foothold over driving the legislative agenda. I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand it sound very, very doable. On the other, it's far more political and work-related for my comfort for reasons that I don't want to discuss in fannish spaces.

The second idea, that I'm still interested in, revolves around the gentrification of eclectic urban spaces. This one comes directly from listening way too many times to What's Happened to Soho by The Correspondents. I'd like to use historical footage and photographs compared to modern for entertainment districts, not just in London, but elsewhere. I've been casually browsing the internet for sources and historical background, but this isn't something that would come together quickly.

In the meantime, I just finished Daredevil and OMG is this some good shit! I wish I was inspired to vid the show, but I think I may have to just settle for looking for things other people have done instead.

I've got a complete rough draft of my Premieres vid for VVC and I'm not sure if I want to let it sit for awhile and then look at it with fresh eyes for final editing or get a beta to give a quick look and some suggestions.

In the meantime, while driving around last weekend I heard a piece of music and, BAM, it hits me that I need to vid DW. Just one episode, Deep Breath, so it shouldn't take too long, but I've never vidded the Doctor. I have, however, been watching lots and lots and lots of DW vids to put together a vid show for a con next October, so I guess I've got Who-brain right now.

Reveals for Festivids happened while I was at Gallifrey One . I also a month behind getting a con report written, but that's a problem for another day.

My asignment for a Fargo vid for [personal profile] deelaundry. I absolutely loved this show and has some vague ideas for a vid when searching for a song I had a revelation. You normally wouldn't think of a beloved children's animated Christmas special and an amoral killer who loves to spread chaos, but seriously this song was written just for Lorne Malvo.

Creating a vid for Doctor Strangelove has been in the back of my mind for several years, but this year it was one of the fandoms nominated for Festivids and when I saw that [personal profile] colls requested this movie I decided to make this treat. Originally I was thinking about using something like Tom Lehrer, but then I stumbled across this, a song inspired by the movie.

Festivids

Nominations should begin this month for [community profile] festivids so I've been making a tentative mental list of fandoms to request and fandoms to offer. Now I've got the ideal song for a particular source and, damn, I've got no guarantees that anyone's even going to request it. Even so, I'm going to start checking the best way to acquire source for this.

I do love [community profile] festivids!

I've had to bow out of Britishfest, but I should be posting con reports for the little PWFC con in Manchester, New Hampshire in June and for Loncon3 in August. I've actually offered to be on panels at Loncon3 relating to vidding and other fan remix activities and they followed up by asking me for best times and so forth, so it looks like that's a go. I also offered to put together an sf-themed vidshow, but haven't heard back on that.

Even though I've got two vids for Vividcon, I won't be making this year. Too many cons and not enough time or money. I've got a vid plotted out for Sleepy Hollow that I hope to get done before the new season starts, but we'll see.

The two non-convention, non-vidding fannish things I really want to do this summer are to plunge into tumblr and to add my vids to AO3. I know that's where I usually go these days to prowl for fanfic and, sometimes, vids, so it just makes sense. So far I only have a couple up,
Stuff is Way , the Memento vid I premiered last year at VVC, and I'm British , the Sleepy Hollow vid I did for Festivids this year.

There's two low points in vidding for me. The first is clipping, clipping, clipping - it just feels like I'm never going to get done with it. The second low point comes around midway through when it doesn't seem like it's going to work or that there are going to be enough clips to tell the story. Add to that the fact the the Club Vivid due date comes right in the middle of a long professional conference and there was a point where I was not going to get it done.

Somehow over the past couple of days, everything started to fit neatly in place and, wow, I love the song more and more and it's really going to work. Now I just need to figure out how to do the opening credits like I want, but I do think it will get done.

Which is good, because I have a new earworm going round and round, whispering that I finally may need to make a Duncan/Methos slash vid. I honestly never thought I wanted to make another Highlander vid, but after the CVV vid is done, I just might. I must be the Highlander vidder who has created a D/M slash, but maybe I was just waiting for the perfect song.

I've finished my Festivids assignment and it looks like I might actually finish a second that will either be a treat for someone or, possibly, a pinch hit if one comes up that includes this particular fandom.

The end of next June I'm going to be going to to Britishfest in Omaha. It looks like a lot of fun for fans of Brtish tv, movies and other media. I've volunteered to do a vidshow so I'm compiling a list of vids to consider. I'm also considering cosplay. If I can figure out how to get the feet done, I might just try for a lady hobbit.
valoise: (Default)
I've got a review article to write for a newsletter, holiday plans to make, a whole list of movies I want to watch and the TBR book pile keeps growing, but damn I'm on a roll with [community profile] festivids. The vid for my assignment is going great and in listening to some new music this morning an idea for a treat just dropped into my lap. Don't know if I'll have time, but damn I'll try.
valoise: (Default)
I've got my Festivids assignment and I am so in the vidding groove right now. Source acquired and clipped, audio track laid in and edited and I've got a mental outline of how it will all go down. If things go this smoothly, maybe I'll have time to make a treat for someone, too. There's a couple of ideas percolating.
valoise: (Default)
Just when I think I've made my last Highlander vid, new ideas pop into my head. Last spring I was listening to the new album by Professor Elemental and this song jumped out at me as perfect for an Amanda-chasing-Duncan vid. I know, the singer is a man and the POV is for a woman, but it works for me. Hope it works for you, too.

I'd originally thought I might get this done for Vividcon, but that didn't work. Then I wanted to squeeze this in before Festivids kicked off, but it didn't look like that was going to happen, either. Congress intervened by closing down the government fr 16 days. Since I was one of those furloughed Federal workers, I used some of that time to make this vid. [personal profile] killabeez stepped in with a quick beta and some good HL insights. So, I present to you:

Since I seem to have some time on my hands, thanks to the US government shutdown, I think I'll finally do the Highlander vid I've been thinking about for awhile. I've been cruising through music sources for the fandoms I think I'll offer for Festivids, but I'd like to get Amanda and Duncan out of the way before sign ups start.
