For over a year I've been thinking about making a Hot Ones vid to Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King, so I very happy to get assigned to nicasio_silang who had requested a Hot Ones vid for Festivids.

I offered Rashomon as a source I wanted to vid for [community profile] festivids this year and I was matched up with [personal profile] cupidsbow

Rashomon is one of those movies that everyone's heard about, even if they've never seen it. A murder is committed and there are widely divergent tales of how and why it happened. I knew that I wanted to pare down the story. While I used the woodcutter's discovery of the body to start, the short vid needed to depend entirely the bandit, the samurai, and the samurai's wife to show the wildly conflicting story. After a fruitless search for music with lyrics, I quickly decided to use instrumental music and 2Cellos' version of Technical Difficulties.

I got everything ready, started laying clips in the timeline and then second-guessed myself on the song choice. I lot of time was wasted to discover I had it right in the first place. In the movie Kurosawa never actually shows the murder take place or the actual corpse. The suicide version of events happens with the samurai standing in background. The vid would need to stand on the emotions of the three main characters, with their actions taking a secondary role. After many, many edits this is the finished result.

Although I'll probably always be sporadic in posting to DW, I'd like to start posting con reports again. Last weekend I had a virtual membership to the wonderful [community profile] vidukon_cardiff and surprisingly found the package of convention swag in my mail a couple of days ago. That was really fast UK to US mail service. convention swag I watched the Vidding Narrative panel, which was great and some of the Vidder's Choice vidshow on Friday and both were great. For the rest of the weekend I only managed the 2012 Retrospective and Visual Feast vidshows due to some plans to spend time with family, but the swag contained a thumb drive with premieres vids and I plan to watch them as time permits. I had a vid from Tampopo that I made for the 2020 [community profile] vexercises in the Visual Feast show.

I've always liked Fanfare for the Common Man as a piece of music and have wanted to use it to pay tribute to working women throughout history. But when I began to gather source material it slowly dawned on me that what I really wanted to do was applaud the bravery of women in flight, from 18th c. balloonist Sophie Blanchard to more well known figures such as Amelia Earhart and Jackie Cochran, ending with women in space.

This version of the music is from Aaron Copeland conducting the London Symphony Orchestra playing his Fanfare for the Common Man.

Photographs and video are largely from the National Air and Space Museum, US National Archives, NASA, InternetArchive.org, as well as Ethiopian Airlines

I've been going through my all my imported entries making sure vids and convention reports are tagged for easy retrieval and found that two of my favorite earlier Highlander vids never got posted to LJ. These are both fairly simple, but I've always been fond of them.

Embarking on a selected rewatch of TOS, I thought I'd repost my one and only Star Trek vid, too.

I just got back from VVC a few days ago and here I am in another hotel waiting for another con to start, MidAmericon II this time which is the 2016 Worldcon. I finally have a chance to post the vid I made for the VVC Challenge which had a theme of Descent. Is this a cheesy vid? Sure. Is it full of gratuitous violence? You betcha! From the 2010 movie Rubber I give you the tale of an ordinary car tire from sentience to obsession to murderous rage.

The effect of her long immortal life, fighting to survive for other a thousand years, weighed heavily on Amanda's character during the series Highlander: The Raven. From the first time I heard this song by Alabama Shakes, the idea for this vid started forming. A bid thanks to my beta [personal profile] killabeez.

Before signing up for Festivids I had four strong ideas for vids I might make in four fandoms. When I was paired with [personal profile] elipie to make a Mr. Robot vid I was very happy and very sure I would be using Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones. When I started laying it out in my mind it soon became apparent that this just wasn't going to work for me. On to plan B.

I thought I might try something different and use a spoken word audio source. I found a fantastic reading of If by Rudyard Kipling that was perfect. Perfect, that is, until I started laying down clips and, once again, it just wasn't working for me. On to plan C.

It occurred to me that maybe something that had a more computer-generated sound would be good and I stumbled on Kevin MacLeod's royalty-free site and that lead me to this song, Blipotron that built in exactly the right way for the way I wanted to dissect Elliot's fragmented mind and world.

As the Challenge theme this year for this year's VVC was Memory, it seemed like the perfect time to do a vid I've been considering for quite a while. Alice Guy Blache was one of the first film directors, completing more than 1,000 short films in her career from 1896-1920. She experimented with some of the first scripted stories, with sound and with color. After moving from France to the U.S she had her own film studio in New Jersey, one of the hot spots for film production at the time. Unfortunately most of her works are lost and forgotten.

I considered using music from her era for this vid, but changed my mind when I realized just how many of the surviving works featured movement and dance.

I love the awesome teamwork in Big Hero 6, the focus on science and the female characters who were integral to the team and not just there to be someone's love interest. When it cam to vidding the movie, though, I decided to just focus on how Hiro could always count on them, how they are always there to back each other up.

Reveals for Festivids happened while I was at Gallifrey One . I also a month behind getting a con report written, but that's a problem for another day.

My asignment for a Fargo vid for [personal profile] deelaundry. I absolutely loved this show and has some vague ideas for a vid when searching for a song I had a revelation. You normally wouldn't think of a beloved children's animated Christmas special and an amoral killer who loves to spread chaos, but seriously this song was written just for Lorne Malvo.

Creating a vid for Doctor Strangelove has been in the back of my mind for several years, but this year it was one of the fandoms nominated for Festivids and when I saw that [personal profile] colls requested this movie I decided to make this treat. Originally I was thinking about using something like Tom Lehrer, but then I stumbled across this, a song inspired by the movie.

I'm sad to be missing Vividcon this year, but that will probably only last until my plane takes off Monday on the way to Worldcon in London . It is a consolation to know that with the supporting membership my dvds of vids will be waiting for me when I get back. And I'll try and watch some of the livestreaming vid shows, too, if I have time this weekend.

I did make a Sleepy Hollow vid for Club Vivid. I love John Cho's poor, undead, lovesick Andy Brooks and wanted to give him his own little vid of unrequited love.

In a little over a week I pack my bags and head off to London for Loncon3, this year's Worldcon. Only one month left of summer and a lot of that will be eaten up with travel and there's so much that I wanted to get done.

For instance, the con report I kept putting off for the Peter Wingfield Fan Club Manchester Road Trip. Is it weird to keep having conventions for an actor who doesn't act anymore? Maybe, but it's a great chance to get together with friends and Peter still likes it, so sure, as long as it will fit into his schedule I bet we will keep doing them. Several times during the convention Peter kept making references to next time, so maybe in a couple of years when he's doing his residency we can sneak in another one.

At this con Valentine Pelka joined us and read passages from a novel he's working on. Writer Adam Whitlach is putting the final touches on a novelization of War of the World: Goliath, an animiated film in which Peter voices the lead. He and Peter read a bit of it and it sounds very good. We also had Skype calls with Mark Deklin (Peter's co-star from Riverworld, the club has sort of adopted him) and Eric Small who is the writer/producer/director of the 10,000 Days, a web series in which Peter played a pivotal role. There was so much going on, but in lieu of a real con report, I'll just leave this here.

I would like try to take pictures and write brief con reports from London, but what will probably happen is a few camera shots posted to Facebook and more detailed stuff when I get back.

I had planned on submitting this as a nonattending premiere vid at Vividcon, but I'll just go ahead and post it now, instead.

Title: Fear and Delight
Music: The Correspondents
Lyrics after the vid.

Summary: Love and swords, always a dangerous combination.

Oh but I know you'll cause me grief
Close friends of mine are in disbelief
As they can see what's underneath
Fluttering lashes red lips and pearly white teeth...
I don't show it but I quiver whenever you come near
and I cannot decipher between the thrill and the fear,
I want to stop but I like it too much to let it stop here,
It's wrong but I want you tonight

It was of my own volition but I fell in deep
by running the distance I'd been advised to keep
I trot to the wolf as a doting sheep
it's wrong but I want you tonight

Fear and Delight,
all the way through the night
with a little derring-do I'll fall in love with you

Fear and Delight,
all the way through the night
with a little derring-do I'll fall in love with you

I'm a little boy who's going to be getting his fingers burnt
but I can see the lesson's got to got to got to be learnt
they say that boys have been destroyed but they weren't
It's wrong but I want you tonight

In any case my friends it's too late
like a moth to light like a beast to bate
and I know the black widow eat it's mate
It's wrong but I want you tonight

Fear and Delight,
all the way through the night
with a little derring-do I'll fall in love with you

Fear and Delight,
all the way through the night
with a little derring-do I'll fall in love with you

Just when I think I've made my last Highlander vid, new ideas pop into my head. Last spring I was listening to the new album by Professor Elemental and this song jumped out at me as perfect for an Amanda-chasing-Duncan vid. I know, the singer is a man and the POV is for a woman, but it works for me. Hope it works for you, too.

I'd originally thought I might get this done for Vividcon, but that didn't work. Then I wanted to squeeze this in before Festivids kicked off, but it didn't look like that was going to happen, either. Congress intervened by closing down the government fr 16 days. Since I was one of those furloughed Federal workers, I used some of that time to make this vid. [personal profile] killabeez stepped in with a quick beta and some good HL insights. So, I present to you:

You Remind Me of a Car

Stuff is Way
Memento
When I say that making this vid surprised me, I mean, that I had absolutely no intention of ever making a vid for Memento. In fact, I had only ever seen the movie once, in a theater when it was first released in 2000.

Usually when the germ of a vid idea plants itself in my head, it starts by watching the source. Instead, this time it started with the song. I was listening to the latest album by They Might be Giants and the first time I heard this quirky, disjointed song I immediately thought of this quirky, disjointed movie.

What I was trying to find was the sense of how confusing life is to Leonard. Adding the static at the beginning clips is meant to show the static of his mind every time he finds himself awake with no memory of where he is or what he's done to get there. A life that's constantly being rebooted.

I love Festivids - it’s one of my favorite fannish things of the year because everyone is on equal footing before reveals. Each vid you watch could be a real gem and without the vidder's name attached you go into it with no pre-conceptions. I also love finding new movies and shows through vids. My Netflix queue fills up more than usual after Festivids

My assignment was Queen of Swords for My assignment was Queen of Swords for
[personal profile] rhoboat. I love her vids and was a little apprehensive that she wouldn't like this, but she claims I made her giggle profusely, which makes me very happy. I wish I had some great story about why I chose Sapphire Bullets of Love by They Might Be Giants for the vid, but I just don’t remember the thought process that led up to it.

It was important to me to show the constant tension between Colonel Montoya and Doctor Helm. I knew I wanted to end with Montoya giving Helm his dagger and Helm accepting it. It seemed to be both phallic and submissive.

I decided to make a treat, if possible, this year and I had recently rewatched The Grapes of Wrath so decided on making a treat for the only person requesting a vid for that movie, [personal profile] isis. At first I planned on using one of Woody Guthrie's dust bowl ballads for this vid, but Who Will Comfort Me by Melody Gardot came up on a Pandora playlist and I knew I had to focus on Ma Joad, Jane Darwell's Oscar winning performance as the woman who holds her family together no matter what is so wonderful. I love this vid and it still makes me tear up at certain points.
