Dear Festividder

Thank you, wonderful Festividder!! I love making vids for Festivids and I love, love, love getting them, too. I'm keeping my Dear Festividder details nice and short. As for music, anything that inspires you to vid will make me happy.

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr [TV]
If my vid could riff off of the weird sf and proto-steampunk elements, that'd be great.

Alice Guy-Blache (1897-1907) [Film short]
Her wonderful little short films are so full of movement, something that emphasizes this would be great. Gaumont recently released a dvd with 10 years of her restored short films and they are amazing. There are movies with sound! Lots of roles for women. Dancing! Even a little film about making a costume drama.

Endgame (2011) [TV]
I'm not sure how you will approach the vid, but one of the things I love about this show is the way in which Arkady uses his skills at analyzing situations to solve the mysteries presented to him, especially the mental role-playing he does to put himself in the situation. Chess content in the vid would be a bonus!

Good Eats [TV]
Every year I request a vid for the wacky zaniness that is Good Eats. Someday, I hope, my vid will come. This show is unrequited vid source love.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail [Movie]
Insanity. I want an insanely funny vid, the crackier, the better.

Queen of Swords [TV]
It's all about Colonel Montoya. Adding Dr. Helm gets you bonus points.

Seven Samurai [Movie]
I love the building camaraderie of the seven who band together to save the village. Each man finds his own courage. A vid that emphasizes this would be wonderful.

vidding through the furlough

Since I seem to have some time on my hands, thanks to the US government shutdown, I think I'll finally do the Highlander vid I've been thinking about for awhile. I've been cruising through music sources for the fandoms I think I'll offer for Festivids, but I'd like to get Amanda and Duncan out of the way before sign ups start.

Festivids!

Festivids nominations are open and several fandoms I thought about adding are already there, so I only needed to add these:
Tampopo
Good Eats
Alice Guy Blache (the Gaumont collection of her 1897-1907 short films)
Seven Samurai
Ikiru
The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
Warm Bodies
Highlander: The Raven
Endgame (the Canadian tv series)

I was also thinking about Sleepy Hollow and Orange is the New Black, but these are already there. Someone also nominated Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which I've thought about vidding. Reading through the long, long list of nominated fandoms I've got no idea what I'll be requesting versus what I'll be requesting. In years past I've abandoned fandoms I nominated in favor of other awesome stuff on the list.

Hugos, Hugos, Hugos (and some panels)

One of the biggest reasons I love Worldcon is the Hugo Award ceremony. I love reading through the nominated works. I love the suspense of voting and checking my list of choices against the winners. And I love the ceremony itself where you see seasoned veteran writers and new, young writers all get recognition.

Sadly, my last day of panels )

And then I went back to the hotel to get ready for the Hugos. I always feel like I should at least make an effort to get out of jeans for the ceremonies. For the most part, my top picks all came in at least second. At least this year there were no winners that I strongly disliked, which has happened in the past. In case you're curious, here are the Hugo winners and picture of this year's winning base design.

LoneStarCon day 3, or working to indoctrinate the next generation

Saturdays panels featured poking at the flaws in Star Wars, bemoaning the lack of respect for knowledge in general media and culture, reveling in obscure cinema, and an exploration of history and myth in fantasy and sf. Top that off with too much time in the dealers' room, a fan fund auction and the masquerade, and it was a full day.

First the panels )

I bid, but didn't buy anything at the auction to support DUFF: The Down Under Fan Fund and The TransAtlantic Fan Fund , but maybe I'll do better next year. Both are worthy causes, but I was trying to stick to a very strict budget in order to save up for next year's cons.

After dinner I got in line early for the Masquerade. I know they have big screens on either side of the stage, but I still like to sit as close as possible. In line next to me was a high school age girl from Seattle who was attending her first con ever and having the time of her life. I showed her where to find out about GeekGirlCon and Norwescon in her home city and she is itching to join the Seattle con scene.

Archives, Bujold, London, Spinrad, GRRM and more: Day 2 of LoneStarCon

The second full day at LoneStarCon and took in seven panels and strongly resisted temptation at the art show. There were some prints I liked a a couple of paintings that were tempting, but since I'm saving up for London next year, I resisted.

the eclectic panels of day 2 )

This was the one day I thought I'd make time for hitting some of the bid parties, but I was so tired after SF Squeecast that I just went out to dinner and had a quiet evening reading. I know, sounds lame, but sometimes vacation means kicking back and being lazy.

First day of Worldcon (LoneStarCon3)

While many of my friends were busy at Dragon Con, I headed toward San Antonio instead and managed to take in four days of LoneStarCon3, the 71st World Con. This was only my 3rd Worldcon and once again there was just not enough time for everything. There were media-related panels, panels on writing, panels on all aspects of sf and fantasy, interviews with authors, filk, film festival, science, and lots of lots of real NASA content - it was Texas, after all. I really had planned on taking in some films, but never got around to it. I also meant to take in some bid parties at night, but also didn't make it. Next year, I vow to party.

On to the panels )

And that's it for day one.

Taking notes, posts to follow

Unlike many of my fannish friends I'm not at Dragoncon, I'm at this year's Worldcon which is LoneStarCon3 in San Antonio. I've been to lots of amazing panels re: sf, fantasy, space, and some media stuff and I've been taking lots of notes, so I'll be posting con reports later.

For anyone who loves reading sf and fantasy, consider a Worldcon. It's realtively small (4,000-5,000) and a great place to meet the old pros and the new generation of must-read writers.

VVC premiere

Stuff is Way
Memento
When I say that making this vid surprised me, I mean, that I had absolutely no intention of ever making a vid for Memento. In fact, I had only ever seen the movie once, in a theater when it was first released in 2000.

Usually when the germ of a vid idea plants itself in my head, it starts by watching the source. Instead, this time it started with the song. I was listening to the latest album by They Might be Giants and the first time I heard this quirky, disjointed song I immediately thought of this quirky, disjointed movie.

What I was trying to find was the sense of how confusing life is to Leonard. Adding the static at the beginning clips is meant to show the static of his mind every time he finds himself awake with no memory of where he is or what he's done to get there. A life that's constantly being rebooted.

CVV premiere

Fashion is Danger
Star Trek: The Original Series
I'm not a dance party kind of girl, so I surprised myself a little this year by creating a premieres vid for Club Vivid. I was a little hesitant about the idea but when I got the green light from Ian on it, I plunged ahead. I have to say, it was a lot of fun to do. The idea was sparked by an article on io9 (I think) about the costumes from the original series. I started rewatching the series soon after that and decided it was a fantastic idea for a vid.

Flight of the Conchords are always a great band to mine for cracky, funny vids and this song was fantastic for the job. Most fun I've had making a vid in ages.

Isn't it Thursday yet?

I am so ready for Vividcon. Actually, I'm really ready for a vacation since work, which I normally love, has really been piling on the strange requests from our central office in Washington. I won't go into the details here, fandom is as escape from the bureaucratic world of working for the government, but in a weird way it's also given me the perfect solace.

I watch practically all the vids during [community profile] festivids making a list of movies and shows that are new to me and look like something I might want to follow up on. This year The Thick of It made my short list of possible good stuff. With the announcement that Peter Capaldi is going to be the next doctor, I thought this might be a good time to see just what he's like.

OMG, I love foul-mouthed, abusive Malcolm Tucker. Which is so wrong. People should treat each other the way he treats everyone, but damn, I know a few bureaucrats I'd love to put in their place, Tucker-style. The spin-off movie, In the Loop, was not quite as good, but if you love creative cursing and dark British humor (or should that be humour?), check out The Thick of It.

vidding without clipping

Because Final Cut Pro X has a totally different user interface I decided to subscribe to lynda.com and do an online course and I'm glad I did.  One very cool thing I discovered is that you can scrub through your media and tag specific portions.  Instead of making lots of clips, imagine just adding tags to the sections that you're going to use, maybe different tags for the same bit if you're going to use it in different parts of the vid.

I've already made clips for the next vid I've got in the works, but the one after that - I'm going to try tagging.

the geography of vidding

Wheels are turning and plans being laid for a new vid.  A song by a French composer that I first heard on the credits to a British tv show for a vid from a Japanese movie, editing by me smack dab in the middle of the US.  Yup, the world is small and getting smaller all the time.

Rolling the dice

Finally upgraded my iMac to  Mountain Lion.  Now I'll find out is Final Cut Express will work with this OS.  That's the main reason I waited to upgrade but now that I don't have any projects pending it seemed like a good time to do it.  Plenty of time to find new vidding software if FCE craps out.

Fandom is everywhere

Coming home on the train from a visit to Connecticut this week i found myself seated in the dining car next to a young woman reading Paul Cornell's London Falling, a book that's on my buy-and-read shortlist. We started talking about Worldcon and fandom and Doctor Who and Wiscon, which she normally attends and I've been thinking about going to. Then, yesterday morning on arriving at Chicago I bumped into Jo Walton, author of Among Others. Wish I'd known she also had a roomette in my sleeper car, I would have bought her a drink in the lounge car since she's always seemed like an amiable person. Turns out Jo is on her way to Wiscon where she's a GoH. Small world indeed.

vidbrain melting

I've got a complete rough (and I do mean rough) draft of a VVC premiers vid.  It's kind of a departure for me and I think I'm going to let it sit and ferment a bit before I go and tweak it a bit.  I know there's a lot of stray frames that need to be cleaned up after I added some cross dissolves.  In any case, I think I'm going to like it.  Hopefully someone at VVC will like it too.  I hadn't ever planned on vidding Memento, but on the new They Might Be Giants album there was a song that jumped out at me as being the perfect fit.

Now, where's that draft I had for a light-heared Duncan/Amanda HL vid?  I think I'll have to just go and watch some HL and work on that.

CVV vid done

I've finished my CVV vid and it still makes me smile whenever I watch it, which is a very good thing.  I've done vids that, by the time I was done, I never wanted to hear that song again.  Now I've just got to wait until August to find out if it makes anyone else happy.

aahhh DS9

I'm in the middle of rewatching ST:DS9 and loving it so much.  When it was first broadcast I was really doing  a lot of SCA and must have missed a lot of eps, there's so many I'm seeing for the first time.  I'm in love with Sisko all over again.  But what I really want to read is Bashir/Garak and Bashir O'Brien and KIra/Dukat.

Besides AO3, I'm going to have to find some fic archives that haven't become obsolete since the series ended.

Vividcon

I really thought about not going to Vividcon this year, but went ahead and registered anyway.  It looks like this summer at work is going to be nuts and I'll definitely need the vacation. I'm also doing a vid for Club Vivid that involves making clips from 23 different episodes of a show.  I'll be lucky to get this done, so I may not even make a VVC premieres vid.  But I've got an idea for a really hot Duncan/Amanda vid, just when I thought I was done vidding Highlander, so if it's done in time to submit for VVC, great.  Otherwise, I'll just finish it at my own pace.

I'm glad I like the vidding process, 'cause the preliminary work to making a vid is pretty tedious.  But once I start getting things down in the timeline and work at making the story I've got in my head come to life, that makes it worthwhile.

Festivids reveals!

I love Festivids - it’s one of my favorite fannish things of the year because everyone is on equal footing before reveals. Each vid you watch could be a real gem and without the vidder's name attached you go into it with no pre-conceptions. I also love finding new movies and shows through vids. My Netflix queue fills up more than usual after Festivids

My assignment was Queen of Swords for My assignment was Queen of Swords for
[personal profile] rhoboat. I love her vids and was a little apprehensive that she wouldn't like this, but she claims I made her giggle profusely, which makes me very happy. I wish I had some great story about why I chose Sapphire Bullets of Love by They Might Be Giants for the vid, but I just don’t remember the thought process that led up to it.

It was important to me to show the constant tension between Colonel Montoya and Doctor Helm. I knew I wanted to end with Montoya giving Helm his dagger and Helm accepting it. It seemed to be both phallic and submissive.

I decided to make a treat, if possible, this year and I had recently rewatched The Grapes of Wrath so decided on making a treat for the only person requesting a vid for that movie, [personal profile] isis. At first I planned on using one of Woody Guthrie's dust bowl ballads for this vid, but Who Will Comfort Me by Melody Gardot came up on a Pandora playlist and I knew I had to focus on Ma Joad, Jane Darwell's Oscar winning performance as the woman who holds her family together no matter what is so wonderful. I love this vid and it still makes me tear up at certain points.
