PWFC Portland con, part 2
Apr. 11th, 2012 07:04 pm Highlander fans know David Abramowitz from the special features on the dvds. The head writer and show runner, he has been called the heart of the show. He is one of our favorite guests for PWFC cons and one of the nicest guys around. His panel kicked off Saturday morning and we caught up with what he’s been doing. He talked about some of the things he had in the works that have fallen through. These included the show for Al-Jazeera’s children’s channel, an animated series about Arabian horses in the desert. He also talked about several project he’s pitched and is looking for money to produce, all of them with an international feel. These include:
1. A movie based on the book Nairobi Heat in which a black cop from the American Midwest follows a cast to Kenya and realizes how different his world is from Africa.
2. Two movie ideas loosely based on Chinese folk tales but in a modern setting.
3. A story about Arabian pearl divers who fight against pirates.
Finally, he was asked about the Highlander remake. Davis-Panzer has a script that, David says, looks good and they are now in the casting stage. They have asked for notes from him on it, so hopefully we’ll get a good movie from this. He said they are also working on an iPad Highlander game.
Peter was up next. One of his classes requires students to reflect and write on specific topics and he read a couple of essays that he’d written. One of them was on his decision to become a doctor. The other was written after an assignment where the med students shadowed nurses on the ward and he wrote on the teamwork that doctors need to develop with the entire healthcare team at the hospital. Both essays were well-written, insightful and intelligently developed.
The auction is usually a mainstay of Sunday morning, but Peter had a test on Monday and would be leaving early on Sunday, so we did it on Saturday instead. If you’ve never been to an auction at a con, I’m sorry for you, it’s fun and crazy and hard to explain. If you have been to a con, you know what I’m talking about. I’ve got a lot of photos of the auction that will give you a taste.
The autographs session went really well. PWFC lets you get up to two things signed by each person. Each guest sits at a large table and and the fans move from table to table, chatting with the guests and getting a group shot with guest, with one fan seated on either side of the guest and the rest lined up behing. These photos are wonderful since they are a nice record of all the fans who were there.
And that’s it for tonight. It looks like I might be splitting the con report into four parts instead of three, so come back in a couple of days for more.
