It looks like I'm going to be putting together a panel for HLWW9 in April. Keep posted for more information. As it stands now, we'll be doing it like a little film festival. Vidders will show a video and then be available to answer questions about their inspiration and techniques for creating it. I know it will be on Friday, but don't know when.

More info and a call for volunteers soon.

I know that the outstanding history of HL vids and vidders and their legacy in the overall history of vidding is a problem for discussion because of the slash issue at actor cons. But that being said, is there room for the acknowledgment of our fandom's place in the wider scheme of things?

It was funny at HLWW8 in Vancouver when Lizzie Gracen and Peter were on stage and she started talking about slash. Peter said that there was "no furrow that Methos hadn't plowed." That said, I'm probably going to have to limit vids in the panel to those that don't aren't overtly slash. Which is a shame since there's some really good slash vids out there. But there's good non-slash as well.

As for me, I've been working on a Kronos-Methos slash vid to a punk version of Tainted Love. But this won't be the vid I take to LA. Gotta finish an Amanda vid first and take that one. As soon as I finish figuring out iMovie 09. It is verrryyyyy different from 06. Mabye better, maybe not, it remains to be seen.

Yeah, the slash issue is odder than ever now in the mainstream fandom and after "Methos Rocks."

I knew that no slash vids would be allowed. I just thought that the history of the fandom's contributions could be acknowledged somehow, without showing or discussing slash vids in particular. People only seeing vids for the first time, or only seeing vids mentioned on places like YouTube or links on the official message boards, might not know that this has been going on for a long time or that HL fans even produced a body of widely admired work.

Are you going to be in LA? Since I'm putting the vid panel together I don't see why the history of HL vidding couldn't be incorporated into it? I don't know how much time I'll have, 1 or 1 1/2 hours, I suppose. The plan right now is to give each presenter 10-15 minutes, time to show the vid and talk about it briefly. There's no reason one of those segments couldn't be given to a brief history of vidding.

If you had in mind a full panel on the history of vidding and are willing to put it together, you could always suggest it. I don't know if they have all of the fan panels lined up or if they are still looking for more.

I've been poking at this -- but I can't afford the HLWW cons and I'm not that comfortable with actor cons anyway. I'd be willing to do research or work with someone else who could present a program. Since the con will be in LA, you might be able to invite a west coast HL vidder who could speak from her own experience.

I do understand about not doing actor cons, I didn't go to my first one until 2006.

I've only been looking at vids for about 3 years and I have tried to dig up any I could find online to watch and enjoy. Unfortunately, I know that in the past few years many have disappeared and some were never online to start with.

This con panel is fairly fluid, I'm waiting to see who answers my call for participation. In an ideal world, it would be really nice to have someone put together a compilation of early vids. In everyday life I work to preserve historical documents; preserving the history of fandom would be a good thing! If it doesn't happen for the LA con, maybe sometime in the future.

Just spinning ideas off the top of my head, wouldn't it be nice to put together a documentary of HL vidding as kind of a visual essay? It would definitely be a labor of love, tracking down vidders, getting clips together, transferring analog early stuff to digital, etc, etc. A lot of work and I'm afraid since I'm kind of a late bloomer to fandom (although a HL fan from season 1) I just don't have the names or contacts to pursue it right now. Someday it would be cool, though.

Contact me offline if you want to pursue this. I think the visual essay would be wonderful. I could tell you what I know. A while back, pat_t also put together a list of HL vids she's collected, if I remember correctly.

OTW has begun work on vidding histories and oral histories (info on it here). Since OTW members include former HL vidders, someone might already be working on a history.
