I've been reading archivesblog for a while now and the posts vary in quality and topic a great deal, but the links to posts by the Director of the Iraqi National Library and Archives (INLA) are a stark reminder that on my toughest day at any of the archives I ever worked at I never had it so bad.

Never had to bombs along the fenceline, try to work with only sporadic access to electricity, endured national guard or police searches my home in a neighborhood sweep, had to call coworkers to see if they survived the bombing of their neighborhood, etc. Sobering stuff. And the man's dedication under the worst of circumstances to ensure that they can do the proper work of archives, saving historical documents and government records and trying to make them available to the public. In my mind, he is as much an Iraqi hero as any soldier. A cultural hero fighting to preserve the past to enlighten the future.

Also makes me really thankful to live where I live.
