The big move is over and now it's time to get settled back into the routine of life. Like actually updating my lj on something resembling a regular basis.

Even though I grew up not too far from here in a town not much larger than Abilene, settling into this town is proving to be a lot easier than I'd expected. And the rhythms of small town life are reassuring. In the two short weeks I've been here I've met more neighbors and had more sincere dinner invitations from co-workers than in all 5 years in Seattle.

I was worried a little about access to shopping, but I think the internet and mail order should take care of any gaps. That plus two cities of 40-50,000 within an hours drive a larger ones just a little further, and I don't think I'll have a problem. And Abilene has a book store, a local yarn shop, and a natural foods store, none of which I expected.

Work looks like it will be great, a lot of things are the same as in Seattle; both jobs are part of the same agency, after all. But the pace is a bit more laid back and it looks like I'll be able to devote more time to the records and manuscript collections and maybe a bit less to mindless bureaucratic paper-pushing. Aw, the joys of being a paid, professional history geek!
