Should have known that the dead bird was a bad omen. You know the old saying that bad things happen in 2s? Well the dead bird was just the beginning. The Saturday following that I was in the middle of sewing new curtains and had to go the store to get some things. Made the purchases and hoped in the car and turned the key and nothing. Dead battery. The guy from the tow truck opened the hood and got a puzzled look on his face. I looked to see what he was looking at and I was a bit puzzled myself. There were obvious places to hook up the jumper cables, but they weren't connected to the battery. In face, we could find the battery. When we got the car back to his shop I pulled out the owner's manual and we found that the battery is actually in the back, under the spare tire in the trunk. Who ever heard of sticking the battery in the trunk? On top of that, this was a fairly different kind of battery and there were none in Abilene. The closest one he could find was twenty miles away in a parts store that was not open on the weekend. So, I was on foot for the weekend.

About a week later bad thing number 3 struck. Came from home from work and went to wake up the trusty old iMac to check the email and found it to be dead. Not just sleeping, but dead. The nice guy in Salina who used to be a cerified Apple serviceman has retired so I had to take my baby to Manhattan. It's a long story, but it took a week and a half before I got my machine back home and safely installed in the study. On the plus side, I had him stick in 1 gb more ram so things are blazing right along. Maybe I will finally take a stab at vid editing.
