Bohemian rednecks
Jan. 16th, 2007 08:23 pmMet a man today who has some literary connections and does occasional spots on NPR. His radio work brings him to Little Rock from time to time and we had fun for a while talking about just how to describe the scene. Cosmopolitan was discarded immediately, even though the art and music there flourishes. We also both agreed that Little Rock was a bit more 'good old boy' than more traditional Southern cities like Atlanta or Charleston. And a lot less pretentious and more eclectic that either of those cities as well.
Finally, the best we could come up with is bohemian rednecks. And that fits. Sometimes I really miss Little Rock. It was a small enough city to get around in well and the appreciation of music and art and history is strong there. Of course, I am kind of thinking about the core of the city from the Governor's mansion area to the River Market, from downtown to Hillcrest and maybe as far west as UALR. West Little Rock, with it's big box chain stores and commercial sprawl could be Anywhere, USA. Nope, it's the center of the city that has my heart.
Now, if only it didn't also have the heat and humidity. And the bugs.
Naw, much as I know I won't be living in Kansas for the rest of my life, I don't thing Little Rock is my retirement location of choice either, but I sure do miss it. I guess I've got about 12 more years to find the spot that my heart is drawn to the most. Little Rock is close but doesn't quite hit the mark. Still miss it though.
