Rolling the dice

Finally upgraded my iMac to  Mountain Lion.  Now I'll find out is Final Cut Express will work with this OS.  That's the main reason I waited to upgrade but now that I don't have any projects pending it seemed like a good time to do it.  Plenty of time to find new vidding software if FCE craps out.

From what I understand, getting FCE 4 to work (either with a clean install or after an OS upgrade) on Lion or Mountain Lion is kind of iffy because it was written for a different platform and needs some component called Rosetta that was dropped after Snow Leopard. So, I hope it works for you!

I didn't have any problems with Lion and after the upgrade lase night FCE does open and let me import files, but there could be hidden problems I haven't encountered yet. I was all set to maybe jump to Adobe Premiere when they went to a rental model. IDk, maybe I'll move to Final Cut X, who knows.

It's a good sign that you can open FCE and import files. Most of the issues I heard about involved it not launching at all, or not being able to open existing projects anymore. Fingers crossed.

I dl'd a trial of FCPX and found the interface (dark grey backgrounds with tiny lighter grey text, plus bonus bright neon-colored buttons and file placeholders) impossible to use. YMMV.

Adobe's move to rental model was totally boneheaded and greedy, IMO. It's too bad Photoshop, specifically, doesn't really have any competition, because it really screws freelance graphic designers/artists, big time.
