PWFC Portland con report, part 1

I just realized that I’ve been back from the recent Peter Wingfield Fan Club convention in Portland for almost two weeks and still haven’t written up a con report so for the next few days I plan to rectify that situation. It was a wonderful time meeting up with friends and catching up with Peter. As GOH we had club perennial favorites David Abramowitz and Jim Byrnes and for the first time Gillian Horvath joined us. Lots of great info about Peter’s last few projects before med school, Highlander, Sanctuary and more.

I got there on Wednesday and found a group of us already in the bar hanging out. The bar at the Doubletree was in a great location right by the lobby and the elevators which made it a perfect place to get together. In fact, I think I did more hanging out in the bar this con than ever before. The hotel was also in the light rail free ride zone so it made getting around the city really easy.

On Thursday a group of us went to Portland Center Stage for some Shakespeare. The production for Cymbeline was in the round in a very small theater space and it was fantastic. They did it with a minimal number of actors. With innovative costume and beard and make up changes, each actor played multiple roles. Sandy had seen a more traditional production of the play earlier this year in New York and said the one in Portland was better.

Back at the hotel more PWFCers kept coming in all day and into the evening. It’s kind of amazing that for a small con (only about 60-65?) we had a real international group with members from the US, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, the UK and Australia.

Friday morning I went with Gabriela to check out VooDoo Doughnuts , okay but a bit overhyped. we had a volunteer meeting early on. I was one of the people working the autograph session, so our little band did a walk through to make sure we had the logistics of the thing down. The hotel had set aside a room for the this that was as far as possible from the main con room and the schedule was tight so we wanted to make sure things flowed smoothly.

I met up with Sharon G. and Bruce at lunch and we headed off to the train to go to Powell’s City of Books, always a must when I go to Portland. I’m doing some research into the history of candy and candy-making and was happy to find a couple of useful books. I also found an 1854 British cookbook that I haven’t seen online anywhere yet for a decent price. On the way to the train we met up with Sharon L. and Nic who had a map with shooting locations for exterior shots for Grimm all plotted. Great idea, which I had thought of that.

The con kicked off at 6 pm with Peter’s first panel. He talked about going back to school and fielded questions from the audience. Talking about the 10,000 Days web series, he asked us what we thought. So far there’s only three short episodes full of hints of more to come. I told him it was like being invited to a dinner party and being only served appetizers, which he found hilarious. He also talked about Hamlet, in which he plays Claudius, which is in limited release, and about JumpRopeSprint, which I talk about later.

We broke for supper and then gathered for the Meet and Greet. The GOH were about an hour late for that due to extremely slow service where they’d gone for dinner, but it was a lot of fun once it got started. PWFC always has a carnival after the meet and greet to raise money for Project Edan . I didn’t stay too late since I expected Saturday to be really busy. And it was, but more on that tomorrow.

A most excellent Con all around--very nice to see you there! It was very generous of Peter to make the long trip to Portland in the midst of his school year, (all the GOH's gave a great deal of their time despite their busy professional commitments.) A grand rendezvous was had by all!

It was a lovely con, best I've been at in a long time. Thanks for doing a write up, I never seem to get around to it. And Powell's is amazing. You can buy from them on-line as well, though that isn't as much fun as getting lost in the store.

Shopping Powell's live is definitely more fun. Tasty baked goods in their coffee shop, too. I'd love to get the recipe to the French almond cookie I had there.
